January 2020 End of Watch Report

Line of Duty Death report for January 2020 showing 12 line of duty deaths nationally, an 8% decrease from last January.

January 2020 started the year with a total of twelve line of duty deaths across the country.  Of those twelve deaths, three were the result of gunfire, seven were auto-related (two vehicular assault, two struck by vehicle, one vehicle pursuit, one auto crash, and one motorcycle crash), one was the result of a heart attack, and one was due to a 9/11-related illness.  Of the twelve officers who died in January 2020, four were women.

December 2019 End of Watch Report

December 2019 Line of Duty Death Report showing 19 total Line of Duty Deaths for a yearly total of 134, a 20% decrease from the total for 2018

In December 2019, nineteen officers in the United States died in the line of duty, making December the deadliest month of the year. Of those nineteen, nine line of duty deaths were auto-related (four automobile crashes, three vehicular assault, one vehicle assault, and one struck by vehicle); five were the result of gunfire; two were the result of heart attacks; two were the result of 9/11-related illnesses, and one was due to an explosion.

The yearly total for 2019, then, stands at 134 line of duty deaths nationally, a 20% decrease from 2018, and down in all four categories tracked by ODMP (gunfire, auto, heart, and other).

End of Watch Report September 2019

September 2019 Line of Duty Death Report showing 8 LODDs in Sept 2019: 4 gunfire, 1 auto, 1 heart attack, and 2 other causes of death. Total YTD is 94, a 26% decrease from last year at the same time.



In September 2019, eight law enforcement officers died in the line of duty in the United States.  Of those eight deaths, three were the result of felonious gunfire, one was the result of inadvertent gunfire, one was the result of an automobile crash, one was the result of a heart attack, and two officers died due to 9/11-related illness.

The total number of line of duty deaths in 2019 stood at 94 at the end of September, a 26% decrease compared to the same time frame last year.  Line of duty deaths are down in all four major categories tracked by ODMP, a trend we hope to see continue throughout this year.

In August of 2019, there were twelve line of duty deaths in the United States.  Of those twelve line of duty deaths, three were due to 9/11-related illnesses, one to a duty-related illness, two to assault, three to gunfire, two to automobile crashes, and one to a heart attack.  The year-to-date total stands at 85, which represents a 25% decrease in comparison to the same time last year.
