End of Watch Report July 2020

 

Across the country, a total of 30 officers died in the line of duty in July 2020.  Of those thirty deaths, five were the result of gunfire and four were auto-related (one motorcycle crash, one vehicular assault, and two struck by vehicle).  Of the twenty one remaining deaths, two officers drowned and nineteen officers died as a result of COVID-19.

At the end of July, the year-to-date total of line of duty deaths is at 151, a 68% increase over the same time last year.

The Officer Down Memorial Page extends our deepest condolences to the families, friends, and agencies who lost a loved one to a line of duty death in July 2020.  We encourage our supporters to read their memorials and share this information to raise awareness of line of duty deaths in the United States.

End of Watch Report January 2018


In the first month of 2018, eight law enforcement officers died in the line of duty.  Of those eight deaths, five were the result of gunfire, two were auto-related, and one was the result of a 9/11-related illness.

The deaths were spread across seven different states and one federal agency.

The Officer Down Memorial Page End of Watch Report: November 2016

November 2016 had the most line of duty deaths of any month so far this year, in a year where eight out of eleven months have had LODDs in the double-digits.  Twenty one law enforcement officers from across the country died in the line of duty in November 2016, bringing the year-to-date total to 133, up 13% from last year at this time.

Of the 21 officers who gave their lives in November, twelve died as a result of gunfire.  Gunfire deaths in 2016, at 60 already, are overall up 67% from 2015.

The other nine line of duty deaths in November were as follows: three officers were struck by vehicles, one was struck by a train, three died as a result of auto crashes, one was the result of vehicular assault, and one death was due to a heart attack.
