End of Watch April 2020

April 2020 report showing 32 line of duty deaths, a 38% increase over the same time last year

In April 2020, 32 officers in the United States lost their lives in the line of duty; 23 of those line of duty deaths were the result of COVID-19 contracted while on duty.

Additionally, four officers died in April as the result of gunfire, three died as the result of automobile crashes, one died from vehicular assault, and one officer was struck by a vehicle.

At the end of April, a total of 69 officers had died in the line of duty, a 38% increase over the same time last year.

December 2019 End of Watch Report

December 2019 Line of Duty Death Report showing 19 total Line of Duty Deaths for a yearly total of 134, a 20% decrease from the total for 2018

In December 2019, nineteen officers in the United States died in the line of duty, making December the deadliest month of the year. Of those nineteen, nine line of duty deaths were auto-related (four automobile crashes, three vehicular assault, one vehicle assault, and one struck by vehicle); five were the result of gunfire; two were the result of heart attacks; two were the result of 9/11-related illnesses, and one was due to an explosion.

The yearly total for 2019, then, stands at 134 line of duty deaths nationally, a 20% decrease from 2018, and down in all four categories tracked by ODMP (gunfire, auto, heart, and other).

End of Watch Report June 2019

Line of Duty Death Report for June 2019 showing a total of 14 LODDs, a 34% decrease from this time last year


In June of 2019, 14 officers died in the line of duty in the United States, making this the deadliest month of the year.  Of those 14 line of duty deaths, five were the result of gunfire, three were the result of an automobile crash, two were the result of heart attacks, two officers were struck by a vehicle, and two officers died as a result of 9/11-related illness.  Although June was the deadliest month of 2019, the year-to-date total of 61 line of duty deaths nationally puts us at 34% below this point last year.
