End of Watch March 2020



In March of 2020, eleven law enforcement officers died in the line of duty across the United States. Of those eleven deaths, five were the result of gunfire, five were auto-related (three automobile crashes, one vehicular assault, one vehicle pursuit), and one was the result of a heart attack.

The total number of line of duty deaths in 2020 stands at 32 at the end of March, which is a 20% decrease from the same time period last year.

December 2019 End of Watch Report

December 2019 Line of Duty Death Report showing 19 total Line of Duty Deaths for a yearly total of 134, a 20% decrease from the total for 2018

In December 2019, nineteen officers in the United States died in the line of duty, making December the deadliest month of the year. Of those nineteen, nine line of duty deaths were auto-related (four automobile crashes, three vehicular assault, one vehicle assault, and one struck by vehicle); five were the result of gunfire; two were the result of heart attacks; two were the result of 9/11-related illnesses, and one was due to an explosion.

The yearly total for 2019, then, stands at 134 line of duty deaths nationally, a 20% decrease from 2018, and down in all four categories tracked by ODMP (gunfire, auto, heart, and other).

Line of Duty Death Report showing 9 line of duty deaths in November, bringing the YTD total to 111, a 28% decrease from this time last year

In November 2019, nine law enforcement officers died in the line of duty in the United States. Of the nine line of duty deaths, five were the result of gunfire and four were auto-related (two auto crashes, one vehicular assault, and one struck by vehicle). This brings the year-to-date total to 111 officers who have given their lives in the line of duty in 2019, representing a 28% decrease over the same time last year.

End of Watch Report October 2019

Line of Duty Death Report for Oct 2019 showing that 7 officers died in the line of duty, bringing the YTD total to 102, a 27% decrease from this time last year.

In October 2019, seven law enforcement officers died in the line of duty across the country.  Of those seven, three died in auto-related incidents (two struck by vehicles and one auto crash), one officer died as a result of gunfire, one died of a heart attack, one officer died as the result of an assault, and one cause of death remains unidentified and is still under investigation.

The total number of line of duty deaths nationally at the end of October 2019 stood at 102, which is a 27% decrease from the same time last year.

Line of Duty Death report for July 2019 showing 8 LODDs in July and 69 total LODDs YTD, a 36% decrease from this time last year

In July 2019, eight officers died in the line of duty in the United States, bringing the year-to-date total to 69 officers.  This is a 36% decrease from the same time last year.

Of the eight officers who gave their lives in July, three died as a result of gunfire, three died in auto-related incidents (one struck by vehicle, one vehicular assault, and one auto crash), one officer died from a heart attack, and one died as the result of a duty-related illness.

End of Watch Report June 2019

Line of Duty Death Report for June 2019 showing a total of 14 LODDs, a 34% decrease from this time last year


In June of 2019, 14 officers died in the line of duty in the United States, making this the deadliest month of the year.  Of those 14 line of duty deaths, five were the result of gunfire, three were the result of an automobile crash, two were the result of heart attacks, two officers were struck by a vehicle, and two officers died as a result of 9/11-related illness.  Although June was the deadliest month of 2019, the year-to-date total of 61 line of duty deaths nationally puts us at 34% below this point last year.
