End of Watch Report February 2020

Line of Duty Death Report for February 2020 showing 8 LODDs for the month, bringing the YTD total to 21, a 28% decrease from this time last year
In February 2020, eight law enforcement officers died in the line of duty in the United States.  Of those eight deaths, five were due to gunfire and three were due to automobile crashes.  The year-to-date total number of line of duty deaths at the end of February stood at 21, which is a 28% decrease from the same time last year.

January 2020 End of Watch Report

Line of Duty Death report for January 2020 showing 12 line of duty deaths nationally, an 8% decrease from last January.

January 2020 started the year with a total of twelve line of duty deaths across the country.  Of those twelve deaths, three were the result of gunfire, seven were auto-related (two vehicular assault, two struck by vehicle, one vehicle pursuit, one auto crash, and one motorcycle crash), one was the result of a heart attack, and one was due to a 9/11-related illness.  Of the twelve officers who died in January 2020, four were women.

End of Watch Report August 2019

In August of 2019, there were twelve line of duty deaths in the United States.  Of those twelve line of duty deaths, three were due to 9/11-related illnesses, one to a duty-related illness, two to assault, three to gunfire, two to automobile crashes, and one to a heart attack.  The year-to-date total stands at 85, which represents a 25% decrease in comparison to the same time last year.

End of Watch Report October 2018


In October 2018, ten law enforcement officers gave their lives in the line of duty.  At the end of October, the total number of line of duty deaths in the U.S. came to 123, which is a 2% increase over the same time last year.  Automobile related deaths are down this year, but unfortunately gun-related line of duty deaths have increased.

Of the ten officers who died in October 2018, four died as the result of felonious gunfire, two died from 9/11-related illnesses, one from a duty-related illness, one was struck by a vehicle, one died as the result of an automobile crash, and one officer drowned.  Two of the officers who died last month were female and the other eight were male.

The Officer Down Memorial Page End of Watch Report: April 2017


In the month of April 2017, ten law enforcement officers died in the line of duty in the United States.  Of those ten deaths, five were the result of motor vehicle crashes (four auto and one motorcycle), four were the result of felonious gunfire, and one was the result of assault.

The total number of line of duty deaths in 2017 stands at 42 at the end of April.  Gunfire deaths are down, but motor vehicle accidents are up significantly.
